The Donbass arena opens on 29 August 2009, even though with the speed of construction and schedule it could have been done earlier. 29 August is the Miners day in Ukraine and Donetsk City day, and since the name of the club Shakhtar Donetsk translated to English is "Donetsk Miners", Donetsk is in the Donbass region, which itself is a mining region, this date was chosen for its symbolism.
American RandB singer-songwriter Beyonce Knowles will perform a show from her I Am... Tour on the opening night of the new stadium. It will be Knowles' first performance in Ukraine.[1]
Donbass arena was included in the official bidding project submitted by Poland and Ukraine for hosting UEFA Euro 2012. It is possible that the stadium will host group stage games and play-off games. Unlike most new stadiums being built in Poland and Ukraine, Donbass arena was not initially intended for that venue.
Beside football matches, the Stadium will also be a place for various concerts and shows. The Stadium's facilities and acoustics will meet demands of local artists and international superstars. Stadium tours will add to the list of distinctions. The general concept of the future tours will include the insight into unique features of Donbass Arena, a visit to footballers' rooms and FC Shakhtar Museum and, finally, a drop at FC Shakhtar brand shop for souvenirs.
